Will, well that can seem weird, but it can work.
I think there are plenty of different ways to do this, but that way is alright. It’s very simple, and can be effective if you have the right attitude.

why do I keep seeing advice on here saying you should say: Hi my name is so and so, shake their hand and ask theirs? it seems like a strange thing to do to a complete stranger.

if the person is grown in a Asian subcontinent culture,

can you Walk up to the person and say “Hi!” or “Hey!”. “My name is so and so.” Shake their hand. “What’s yours?”

I guess its bit weird… lol
